Accessibility

KeepOtter builds on the accessibility features of iOS instead of inventing its own. Here is what works and where we are not finished.

This is a translation for convenience. The German version (Barrierefreiheit) is the binding one.

The essentials

Built on iOS
The app uses the accessibility features of iOS instead of inventing its own.
Checked light and dark
A dark palette of its own with the same contrast, not inverted colours.
Motion can be turned off
With Reduce Motion on, fade-ins and counting animations are skipped.
Open points are listed here
Whatever is not yet checked in every state is written down on this page.

In the app

VoiceOver
Every control has a label that says what will happen. A selection in the grid is announced as "goes" or "stays", protected pictures as "protected".
Larger Text
The app uses Dynamic Type throughout. Numbers and cards grow with it, all the way up to the accessibility sizes.
Dark appearance
A dark palette of its own with the same contrast, not inverted colours.
Reduce Motion
With Reduce Motion switched on in iOS, fade-ins and counting animations are skipped; numbers jump straight to their final value.
Readable without colour
Levels and states always appear as text next to the colour.

What we are still working on

  • The series view with its swipe gestures has a Reduce Motion variant of its own; very large accessibility text sizes are not yet checked there in every state.
  • Custom VoiceOver rotor actions for the grid are still missing; every action is reachable through the normal controls.

On this website

  • Keyboard: every link and control is reachable with Tab, the focus is visible, and a skip link goes straight to the content.
  • Contrast: text meets at least level AA in light and dark.
  • Motion: the small fade-ins while scrolling are off as soon as your system reports Reduce Motion.
  • Images: screenshots carry alternative text that says what the screen shows.
